Changing seasons – September – Definitely Spring

flowers, seasons, Tasmania

My head knows that the seasons here in Tasmania are back to front from my UK background. So I’m posting this monthly series to record the changing seasons and to
encourage my mind to grasp this southern hemisphere reality.

We are a week past the equinox – when the sun is directly overhead the Equator and day and night have equal length there.

Here, it was spring equinox, as we move from the shortest day in June with just under 9 hours of daylight, sunrise at 7.44am and sun set at 4.42pm, towards the longest day in December with over 15 hours of daylight, sunrise at 5.30am and sunset at 8.50pm

September has been pink, with waratah, cherry blossom and magnolia blooms.

The month had plenty of warm sunny days, a few hot days, bare foot walks on the sand, open top cars. Weekends at the beach, scooters forgotten for paddling and sandcastles.

So many beautiful flowers, some I know such as azalea and rhododendrons and forsythia, and wattle. Some native flowers that I have learnt about from my neighbour.

And some that I still can’t identify, even with library books and now a purchased copy of “Guide to flowers and plants of Tasmania”. Please comment if you know what these lovely flowers are. Thank you.

Oh and these. After I’d stopped to take photos on a walk home the other day, Aussie Mate pointed and announced “That’s an itchy ball tree.” Oh, what’s the proper name? I asked. “Just an itchy ball tree! You put the seed pods down someone’s collar, pat them on the back and they itch all day. Didn’t you do that at school?” Um, no! I believe these are plane trees.

September has also been the month where I have see “fuel reduction burns” taking place around the city. I’m glad I’d heard about these on the radio before I saw the smoke. Each one covered approximately 50 hectares of bushland.

Quote from media release by Tasmania Fire Service …
“ Fuel reduction burns are the most effective method for strategically reducing the risk of bush fires for Tasmanian communities. These two strategic burns will create smoke around the suburbs of Hobart, however burning will provide protection from a more damaging bushfire.”

Ok, it’s just more benches for Jude’s challenge.

But Hobart’s metal street furniture is quite comfortable and is coordinated around the city.

We saw these original paintings today, created by a Tasmanian, Wayne Edwards.

He allows animals to walk over the canvas, capturing the individual footprints.

Australia, flowers, trees

wattle 1

My new favourite flower.

Wattle is the flower emblem of Australia, which is fitting as the country has almost one thousand varieties of these “acacia” plants.

The flowers are like tiny bursts of sunshine, small explosions of yellow.

The flowers and leaves vary, as do the shades of yellow. Some grow as clusters of the fluffy balls, others grow along the stems, creating delicate long brushes.

Some grow as low level bushes, some are spindly saplings aiming high, some are huge tall trees, growing amongst the eucalyptus, lining riverbanks and highways.

But at this time of year, they are everywhere, brightening up the greyest of days.

Unexpected place names

history, Tasmania

As we explore Tasmania, we are used to place names that originate from “the old country”. We are used to names with Aboriginal origin, such as Liawenee, Murdunna.

But on a recent day out, we did not expect to drive through Bagdad, over the River Jordan and on through Jericho.

I’ve read that back in 1804 a Royal Marine private was sent out to hunt kangaroo to feed the starving population of the new settlement of Hobart.

He took two books with him, the Bible and The Arabian Nights. With these influences, he flung names at hills and rivers and lakes as he travelled.

The names stuck. Many places became stage coach resting places between the settlements of Hobart and Launceston. So that today you drive past towns signs, over bridges, bridges or notice a name at a post office.

Bagdad – population 996

Jericho – population 500

Jerusalem – now called Colebrook – population 373

Lake Tiberius

Jordan River

100 words, family, me

September is balloons and streamers
for both our girl’s birthdays.
September is autumn,
golden leaves and conkers.
September is a new school year,
end of summer holidays.
September is birthdays,
presents and cake.
September is parties, going out,
friends and sleepovers.
But this year it’s different
away from our girls.
Posting cards and gifts,
transferring money to accounts.
Messages, emails, phone calls,
Facebook chat and FaceTime.
This year they are celebrating
with boyfriend, husband.
Not with us, their parents.
They are happy,
celebrating their own way.
But no balloons or streamers
in our place.
No caterpillar cake here.

Hobart, photos

Yesterday the Royal Australian Air Force display team, The Roulettes, performed a couple of aerobatic displays over Hobart and the River Derwent.

We had a front row view from our balcony at both the 11am show and again at 2.30pm.

“As the RAAF’s elite formation aerobatic display team, the Roulettes perform breathtaking displays, using only hand-eye coordination to fly at speeds of up to 590 kilometres per hour. The six Roulettes may experience up to 4.5G (or 4.5 times the normal force of gravity) during a display in their PC-9/A aircraft. When the Roulettes are not showcasing their skills, they teach qualified RAAF pilots to become flying instructors at RAAF Base East Sale in Victoria.”

This morning, as part of a ceremony in Hobart to commemorate the 75th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, they flew over the Cenotaph, followed by a Hawk jet and a Harvard warbird. Later, the Harvard did it’s own aerobatics over the city.

A delightful and unexpected treat.
