These wooden boat houses have been a feature at Cornelian Bay for almost one hundred years.
The basic wooden buildings with tin roofs are picturesque and colourful. Some have brick chimneys and most are now connected to electricity and water supplies.
Cornelian Bay is a sheltered cove to the north of Hobart city centre, within sight of Queen’s Domain and the Tasman Bridge.
The boat houses range from being flaky, literally, to ship shape. They stand out over the River Derwent on a beach covered in oyster shells.
Boat houses eh? I believe that’s a first on Thursday Doors. I like it; lots of variety, different colours and original decorations. Wonderful post!

Thanks Norm. They are so colourful but I think they are just a wooden shack inside. I’ll keep the illusion behind a closed door.

What a delightful place to visit! As Norm mentioned, I love all the different colours and unique decorations on each. My favourite is the blue and orange door with the sail boat 🙂

Beautiful post–so much texture and color and lined up like that they looked like tiny abodes–for boats, of course, but I wouldn’t mind having one for myself to write within. Thanks!

What a colourful row of houses. Do people live in them or are they just holiday homes or are they actually for boats?

I think they are holiday homes. Some have row boats tied up, to travel out to the yacht in the bay. What a life?

This is why I love the water side – never boring! Love the variety in the colors of the (what they would call in Holland) beach houses:)

I tried a similar series at Rosebud last year. I could not bring myself to publish them, as most had been ‘tagged’ by the lower end of graffiti-ists. Hobart seems to be exempt of such practices.

You are right. Haven’t notice much graffiti here around Hobart. I hadn’t actually thought about it until you mentioned it.

Very cool! Are they like wee holiday houses?
