May brought much needed rain.

IMG_7031

As the autumns colours have faded, grass has turned green again after the scorched look of summer. There have been a few clear sunny days but much of the month has been showery with a few storms, heavy rain and strong winds.

By mid month, there was sufficient water in the dams for Tasmania to be completely powered by renewable energy for the first time this year. Hydro energy took over again as gas power stations and temporary diesel generators were switched off.

Russell Falls and Horseshoe Falls at Mount Field National Park were spectacular. The most water flow we’ve seen in four visits to the park.

Rain clouds have produced interesting skies, picturesque sun rises, sunsets and multiple rainbows.

Some of the flowering gums trees are beginning to bloom.

As we head towards winter, the days are colder and continue to draw in, sunset is now before 5pm. There has been snow on Mount Wellington on three separate mornings, during May, but it didn’t last.

Seals and dolphins are back in the Derwent estuary. I hadn’t noticed either for several months but have seen them on a few occasions during this month. Their presence always makes me smile.

After a year here in Tassie, I have almost got to grips with the months and seasons. Until I saw a sign about local road works to be completed by Spring 2016. My brain said “they’re late, spring is over”. But no, spring will not be here until October / November.

This week’s prompt is “spare”.

I’ve chosen spare wheels, in junk shops and at the V8 Supercars race track. Old and new.

My morning exercise today turned into a slow paced photo walk as I tried to capture some images for a weekly photo challenge.

Here are some of the things that I found “beneath my feet.

I went back out to collect some autumn leaves for this final photo of our front door mat.

This tree came down during strong winds last week.

It is only possible to walk around it at low tide. I broke off a couple of twigs to put in a vase at home. My own piece of broken pine tree.

Last weekend, Hobart hosted the Australian National Bonsai Convention.

These are a few of my favourites from the hundred plus exhibitions.

Some of these little trees are decades old. Such patience is required to create these natural wonders.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Jubilant

Jump For Joy !IMG_6381

This week’s challenge has been a tough one. What photos do I have or could I take to represent “jubilant” – adjective: showing great joy, satisfaction, or triumph; rejoicing; exultant.

Then I thought of this art installation at MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). This large trampoline is outdoors on the forecourt. Every time we have been there, someone has been jumping on it, trying to ring the variety of bells that hang underneath it. Adults and kids alike.

Joy for those jumping and for those watching. It always make me smile.

The end of our gap year

We have now been in Tasmania for over thirteen months.
I’ve finally said goodbye to my gap year.

It was hard to let it go.

We had spent so long wishing and planning and then actually living it.
It extended to nineteen months of permanent holiday.
I managed to drag it out and change the parameters.

A year of non-employment actually ended in August 2015.
So I made it a calendar year – 2015.
That ended, so I changed it to a year in Australia.

Last month, I finally had to make the mind switch.
I’m no longer living a gap year, this is now real life.

As well as applying for jobs, I’ve been doing some volunteer work.
I thought I’d get as busy as possible and see what the universe throws back at me.

I now have a weekday routine.
6.30am alarm call.
I’ve been working part time hours
Nothing too strenuous!

Until today…
For the first time in 625 days,
I have worked a full day.

I’ll write about the volunteer experience in a few days.
For now, I’m putting my feet up! 🙂

Happy eggs.

There is a shortage of eggs here at the moment. Changes in packaging standards and high demand for free range and organic eggs meant our usual brand was not available.

So we picked up a different box containing ten eggs, not a dozen.

This is what we found when we opened the lid.

tree fern 1

There was a feeling of wonder going through my mind as I took these photos.

Wonder at the delicate structure of the leaves, at the rain drops clinging to the tips.

I’m joining Claudette’s series, the “emotion behind the photo”.
