Changing Seasons – October – Spring with hints of Winter

October has been a month of colour, of spring flowers.

A month of changeable weather, the southern hemisphere’s equivalent to “April Showers”. There have been warm sunny spring days, but also mornings when we have woken to snow on Mount Wellington, along with cold southerly winds.

It has been a month of rainbows, which is a nice way to sum up my month of colour posts.

The view from our kitchen looks towards Hobart’s Casino. I wonder what the response would be, if I showed them this photo and asked for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Medieval Festival

Yesterday we went to a local Medieval Festival. The sun was shining. There were market stalls and food and drink stalls selling local produce. There was theatre and music, fancy dress, along with demonstrations of sword fighting, armed combat, Morris dancing, fire acrobats, horse riding. There was archery, face painting, dancing. A really good family day.

The most interesting aspect for us, was the “working trade alley”, where a potter, stonemason, wood turner and blacksmith were demonstrating their skills and products.

This seems to fit with this week’s photo challenge – transmogrify, transform, morph, change. These artisans were experts at transforming a block of stone, a ball of clay, a piece of metal or wood.

Whilst browsing through photos for another challenge, I came across these pictures of the “Net Shops” in Hastings on England’s South Coast. A fascinating reminder of Victorian life.

I’m linking this to Norm’s Thursday Doors series.

astronomy, Tasmania

My bucket list includes watching an aurora.

This evening, we’ve had our best view to date. Aurora Australis put on a show, with greens and purples in a wide arc across the southern sky, including vertical beams of light.

These photos are straight from our camera, no editing of colours.

It was a mild 14°C, on a beach just ten minute’s drive from home. Gotta love Tasmania!

Has something bright or reflective caught you eye?

This golden bench is a result of the rising sun. The rest of the day it is a plain wooden seat.

Today, Hobart welcomed the first cruise ship of the season. A sign that summer is not far away.

But the weather had its own ideas, as we woke to another covering of snow on Mount Wellington.

The city is also host to a royal navy submarine at the moment.

It was exciting to see the city, waterfront and Salamanca Market so busy with tourist and naval uniforms.

Tasmania, time

Today is a public holiday in Tasmania.
Well, in part of Tasmania.
On a Thursday.

Tasmania is just one of 8 states and territories of Australia.
There are national holidays.
There are state / territory holidays.
Then there are regional holidays.

The organisation I work for, has 11 offices dotted around the regions of this little island state.

Today’s holiday in the south is for the Royal Hobart Show. So five offices were closed.
Two offices closed for the Burnie Show in September.
Two offices closed for the Royal Launceston Show earlier this month.
One office will close for the Devonport Show in November.
And one office closed back in May for Agfest Show.

Confused?
