Less blogging and a change of pace

me

After two years and two months, husband and I are both now working full time. We stretched our “gap year” out as long as possible, having a fantastic time exploring, enjoying a new place, a relaxed life style.

Now it’s time for a different reality, earning a living, work schedules, reduced leisure time.

Priorities are changing. I have to manage time again, make choices on how to spend it. So with study deadlines, summer months approaching, beaches to walk on, social events to attend, family and friends to keep in touch with, general household admin and chores to keep on top of …..

…. Blogging will inevitably move down my priority list, along with daily photos and keeping up with other blogger’s posts.

Time is like water
It finds it’s own level
Right now,
it is running through my fingers too fast
Some precious things will have to take a back seat for a while.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who reads this blog, who likes my posts and comments on them. It’s been fun and a pleasure to “meet” you all.

I’m not going away totally, I will post occasionally, pop into this wonderful community a few times a week, to check on posts as time allows. But apologies for not giving your blogs my full attention. We’ll catch up again soon, I hope.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Magic

The magic of light, as seen last night on the beach, at the end of a local art festival.

Dark clothed performers with coloured light sabres, balls on ropes, a hoop and a net.

Then they performed with naked flames. In some of these photos you can see fireman on standby in the crowd.

Bruny Island

Bruny is one of my favourite places. An island, off an island, off the mainland of Australia. It has a resident population of 700 which grows to over 5,000 during the summer months. The local police force doubles for the tourists, from 1 to 2.

A narrow neck of land joins North Bruny and South Bruny with wooden steps leading up to fabulous views.

We’ve taken the car ferry across to the island on several occasions, but today we saw Bruny from a different perspective, from a tour boat.

The island has interesting geology and rock formations. Waves crashing into underwater caves created spectacular curtains of water.

We saw a variety of sea birds, gulls, cormorants, short tailed shearwaters (locally called mutton birds) and shy albatross.

We observed two seal colonies, the male only group of Australia fur seals and a breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals. They were slow and cumbersome on the rocks but sleek and agile as they swam near the boat.

Tiny footprints

After sunset, we heard an unusual bird noise outside. We took a torch out onto our balcony and saw a couple of penguins out on the grass.

There are numerous Fairy Penguin rookeries around the coast of Tasmania, but we didn’t realise they’d be such close neighbours.

We were too surprised to think of taking photos although we did call neighbours and had an impromptu penguin pyjama party.

We have been down to the beach in daylight and tried to identify footprints.

architecture, Hobart

Last weekend, Hobart hosted an “Open House” event. Various buildings, were open for the public to explore.

“Dorney House”, one of Australia’s great modern houses, sits high on a hill on top of the abandoned 1904 Fort Nelson, with panoramic views of the city, the river and Southern Ocean.

Architect, J. H. Esmond Dorney built 3 versions of this house, in similar circular, open plan designs. The first house, built in 1949 was situated on the now empty southern gun emplacement. The second was built in 1966. Both of these homes were destroyed by bush fires. The current house was built in 1978.

It was a privilege to visit inside the now unoccupied home and grounds and to have a personal tour by the son of the the architect.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Chaos

These ruins look chaotic, remains of once structured buildings.

This is the Coal Mines Historic Site.

“It was Tasmania’s first operational mine. Developed both to limit the colony’s dependence upon costly imported coal from New South Wales, as well as serving as a place of punishment for the “worst class” of convicts from Port Arthur, the mine was operational for over 40 years.”

It is now a peaceful, beautiful place to wander along the old tracks, with only natural sounds of the breeze, birds, water lapping at the coast. Yet it is easy for the imagination to conjour the sounds of industry, mining, coal trucks loading the ships and the harsher sounds of convicts and guards living here.
