These ruins look chaotic, remains of once structured buildings.
This is the Coal Mines Historic Site.
“It was Tasmania’s first operational mine. Developed both to limit the colony’s dependence upon costly imported coal from New South Wales, as well as serving as a place of punishment for the “worst class” of convicts from Port Arthur, the mine was operational for over 40 years.”
It is now a peaceful, beautiful place to wander along the old tracks, with only natural sounds of the breeze, birds, water lapping at the coast. Yet it is easy for the imagination to conjour the sounds of industry, mining, coal trucks loading the ships and the harsher sounds of convicts and guards living here.
Great for this theme. I haven’t come across this place before. So much history in Tassie!

Ruins are a different kind of history – a history forgotten. They often make me feel rather sad, yet they hold a fascination at the same time.

Fascinating indeed. I wonder what ruins will be left from our generation, Joanne.

As long as they are ‘natural’ ruins and not caused by war.

It is a bit sad the buildings have been left in ruins, such a big part of history. A very beautiful site though, I really like the photos.

Thanks Lena. There is a lot of history from this era, so in some ways this site gives a different perspective.

The place around the ruins looks so peaceful, but that is never the path of history!
