This month has been busy with visitors, a cousin from the UK and our daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Any excuse to be a tour guide for our favourite places here in Tasmania….

There are signs of autumn amongst the roses and flowering gum trees. I’m collecting conkers. A habit that goes back to when our daughters were small.

One of my photo prompts this week, was “leaves”. Perfect timing, as we visited the Botanical Gardens with our daughter and grandson, before they headed home.IMG_3492IMG_3510IMG_3471

Right now, my favourite place is being at home, watching our grandson, as he practices his crawling and standing skills.IMG_3200IMG_E3076 (1)IMG_3079IMG_E3179IMG_3209

Later today, a very important visitor will arrive, to spend a week with us.

He is travelling more than one thousand kilometres, taking his first ever flight.

This visit has required some additional preparations, some specific equipment.

A travel cot and high chair have been borrowed, a baby car seat hired.

Supplies have been purchased, including a few small toys and books.

Our apartment is now “baby proof”, ornaments and books moved out of reach, our driftwood tree relegated to the communal hallway.

Bricks

Hobart

Sometimes, a photo challenge prompt gets into my subconscious. I have been noticing bricks, in various situations and locations.IMG_2477IMG_2952IMG_3022IMG_2421

1833 is part of a sculpture trail, marking the date of the “new wharf” in Hobart when locally quarried sandstone warehouses were built to serve the influx of ships that loaded and unloaded cargoes of wheat and timber, livestock and leather, rum and flour, salt pork and muskets.IMG_2954

Old buildings made from bricks with these broad arrows, bricks that were convict made and were government property. The arrow supposedly prevented pilfering.

This Memorial Wall contains many original headstones of the early European Settlers in Hobart. The wall is in St David’s Park, which was the site of a cemetery until 1872.IMG_E2881

As I have one daughter in Australia and one in the UK, I get to celebrate two Mother’s Days.

This is the fabulous card I received from my younger girl in London. As well as the # on the card, there have been numerous other hash tags in conversations and messages …
#youturnedoutamazing
#properadult
#arrivedintime
#putitinyourdiary
#proudmum
#mykidsmakemesmile

Also a message from my Sydney girl this morning… “Happy UK Mother’s Day !!! 😘 your card’ll arrive in May 😉”

Love you girls!!! xxx

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens have a story to tell. They are celebrating their 200th anniversary this year.IMG_2745

This delightful “lily pad” platform is the latest addition to the gardens. What a wonderful place to sit and relax, a place for the kids to get down to water level to watch the ducks.IMG_2756

The Gatekeeper’s Cottage now houses information about the gardens, their history and their current purpose of conservation.IMG_2737

Formal gardens, a conservatory, a Japanese garden, lead to oak woodlands and eucalyptus woods. Footpaths meander through regional flower beds, with plants labelled to inform and educate.IMG_2827IMG_2787IMG_2803IMG_2764IMG_2772

It’s a joy to observe the changing seasons at these gardens. As summer ends, there are fewer colourful flowers than at other times of the year. However, there are vibrant greens, hints of autumn and views of Hobart’s harbour location.
