Hobart has its own tall ship. A replica of “Lady Nelson”. It’s always a joy to see her at the waterfront. A contrast to the huge cruise ships that visit our city.
The original “Lady Nelson” ship was built in Deptford, UK in 1799. She sailed to Sydney on her maiden voyage in 1800.
From there, she made multiple voyages to Norfolk Island and was the first ship to bring Europeans to Tasmania in 1803. She explored the east coast of Australia and was a valued link for the new settlements. She also sailed to New Zealand.
I love that first photo. Can you imagine what fun it would be to sail on a ship like that?

I’d love to go out for a sail, but not so sure of the journey from UK to Australia that took several months back in the day.

Yes, very true. I’m thinking more of a pleasure cruise.

Great photos Ruth. I like the reflection of the rigging in your first shot and the picture of the ship on the water.
I’ve been on two tall ships – Soren Larsen now moored in Sydney and Oosterscheld, a Dutch vessel.
We have the tall ships round the world sailing race come into Auckland occasionally. It’s such a great feeling to be on them in the water. There is something nostalgic, exciting, adventurous. To me they are a memory of the old-world that we did not have to endure. It was a hard life.
I can be grateful for those ships and sailors. My ancestors came on a tall ship from Portsmouth, England in the late 1800’s. The ship was called ‘Annie’. Den xx

There is definitely something magical and nostalgic about tall ships. I don’t know how I’d have coped as an early settler though, such a long journey.
