We’ve spent the day on Maria Island. An island off the east cost of Tasmania.
I’ll write about it later but I wanted to share these photos of wombats. Wild wombats on the island that are very healthy and very tolerant of walkers with cameras. In total we saw 21 wombats, on grass, in a barn, crossing the footpath, one with a youngster.
“Since the late 1960s Maria Island has become a kind of Noah’s Ark, as a number of threatened species have been introduced here in a bid to protect their kind. The very things that made the island a convict settlement, now make it an ideal refuge for plant and animal species that are elsewhere under threat.”
I remember our stay on Maria Island when we took our bikes over and stayed in the old prison cells and the wombats were everywhere! It’s a wonderful place to visit. Great shots Ruth!

Thanks Debbie. We only went for the day. Staying overnight is next on our list, hopefully to see some Tassie Devils as well.

Such wonderful creatures. So long as they stay off the road, the ones I’ve met aren’t very street smart.

They are fortunate on Maria Island, as there are no vehicles.

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful wombat pics, Ruth!!! They are truly adorable. It was one of the animals I hoped to see when we visited Australia in the spring, but sadly did not. Next time we’re definitely going to Tasmania, too, and this island–specifically so I can see the wombats 🙂

Well worth a visit, I have only seen them in the wild in National Parks here.

omg – I had no idea they were SO CUTE!!! They are adorable – I just want to pick one up and cuddle it …. although with those claws, I suspect that would be a very bad idea 😉
