100 words – September is …

100 words, family, me

September is balloons and streamers
for both our girl’s birthdays.
September is autumn,
golden leaves and conkers.
September is a new school year,
end of summer holidays.
September is birthdays,
presents and cake.
September is parties, going out,
friends and sleepovers.
But this year it’s different
away from our girls.
Posting cards and gifts,
transferring money to accounts.
Messages, emails, phone calls,
Facebook chat and FaceTime.
This year they are celebrating
with boyfriend, husband.
Not with us, their parents.
They are happy,
celebrating their own way.
But no balloons or streamers
in our place.
No caterpillar cake here.

100 word challenge – and so it begins

100 word challenge – this week’s prompt is … and so it begins.

100words

And so it begins … our countdown.

This time next week, we board a flight to Australia.

In these final seven days we will wind up our UK life, sell our car, pack suitcases, pack up the house, put belongings into storage, give away furniture, washing machine, garden equipment. We will undoubtedly visit the local tip.

We have already notified the utilities, advised change of address everywhere. We have cancelled store cards and online accounts. How many loyalty cards does one couple need?

We will clean the house, take meter readings, hand over keys, juggle finances. Then relax.

Sounds simple enough!

100 words – house frustrations

They say that buying / selling a house is one of the most stressful things we do in life. I can vouch for that and we are only selling.

The stressful elements include …..

~ Keeping tidy for house viewings.

~ Buyers who pull out.

~ Estate Agents who give you the big sell but not the reality.

Right now, we are chasing our solicitor, our buyer is chasing their solicitor, the estate agent is chasing everyone.

I would like to get the two solicitors in the same room and bang their heads together.

It’s an ongoing frustrating waiting game.

100 word challenge – this week’s prompt is …the scent was overpowering…

100words

The two dogs weren’t related. They had different colouring, different personalities.

Oska barked at people and would play in any water he came across. Izak barked at other animals and avoided water, stepped around puddles.

Their local walk was through a park, into woods and out via a country lane.

There were horse riders down the lane. Oska took his opportunity to roll in horse manure, knowing it would result in a telling off and a cold hose down when they got back home. The scent was overpowering but Oska thought the shampoo smell afterwards was worse.

It feels like spring – in 100 words

100 words, day out, flowers, photos, trees

The days are stretching out, sunrise is earlier, sunset is later each day.

Although we are still waking to some frosty mornings, the sun is shining.

Green shoots and spring flowers are showing their faces. Snowdrops, crocus, primroses and the first daffodils.

Blue skies with white fluffy clouds, random raindrops fall but are soon blown away. It doesn’t actually rain today.

It is good to get out from the urban sprawl. Walks in the countryside slow the pace of life, refresh the soul, make me smile.

All is right with my world.

100 word challenge – this week’s prompt is … so what time did you say it was?…

100words

She was tired after a busy Monday. She went to bed around her usual time, an hour before midnight.

Suddenly she was wide awake. She was too hot under the covers. She didn’t want to look at the clock, she just wanted to go back to sleep.

She tossed and turned, trying not to disturb her husband. She waited, laid still, eyes closed, attempting to calm her mind. It felt as though she’d been awake for hours.

Her husband rolled over. “So what time did you say it was?”

Reluctantly she looked at the clock. It was 1.22 am.

100 word challenge – this week’s prompt is …the blue was sapphire…

100words

They’d booked the holiday apartment online, from the opposite side of the world.

They arrived after dark. The apartment was just as they hoped.

They went to bed but insomnia woke her in the early hours. She lay quietly, very aware of the rhythm of life, the sound of the waves on the beach, the sound of her husband’s breathing next to her. All very calming, very peaceful. Back to nature, back to basics.

As the sun rose, she stepped out onto the balcony. The view was simply stunning, grass, beach, ocean. The Pacific was blue, the blue was sapphire.

A foggy morning, the turrets of Ely Cathedral are hidden in the mist.

IMG_4644

Through the doors, the Gothic cathedral is light and bright, with a tall nave. The centrepiece, literally, is the stunning octagon.

IMG_4661

Cambridge is a historic university city, with beautiful buildings, centuries old, and the picturesque “backs” of the colleges.

The city is hectic with shoppers, tourists and students. Bicycles everywhere.

IMG_4680

Just out of town is the American Cemetery. Open space with just the sound of bird song and my feet crunching on the gravel paths. 3,812 WWII graves. 5,127 names on memorial wall with no known grave.

Checking in proved to be ordinary. But the hotel guest was remarkable.

One night, he walked in on his stumps, pushing his wheelchair. He ordered a beer from the Night Manager and the two men got talking.

The guest was ex-military, a double amputee, now performing at the local theatre, touring with a show called “The Two Worlds of Charlie F”.

The Night Manager took his family to the theatre. The show was funny, moving, incredible, telling real stories of Commonwealth service men and women, created and performed by injured war veterans. Inspiring theatre and a memorable hotel guest.

100 word challenge – this week’s prompt is … the suitcase lay open …

100words

We were taking a trip for our silver anniversary and as it turned out, for our eldest daughter’s engagement party. With a parent from each side of the world and dual passports, she’d moved to Sydney four years earlier.

“Mum, can you bring a few things over for me, please?”
“Of course.”
“Great, just the electronic drum kit and didge.”

The suitcase lay open ….. surrounded by clothes, shoes, metal scaffold, drum pads, kick pedal. Oh.

Who takes an original didgeridoo back into Australia? And a drum kit in bits?
The customs guy just laughed at us and waved us through.
