our garden

October started with bearded iris blooms.

Other flower highlights were lilac, pompom bush and this beautiful grass, ixia viridiflora.

We continued to harvest spinach on a daily basis. The little seed pots from Woolworths all thrived and were planted into our veggie patch.

Folk lore here in Tasmania states that you shouldn’t plant tomatoes outside until “Show Day”. This is the annual Royal Hobart Show, which was Thursday 24th October this year. So on that public holiday we bought three different varieties of tomato and planted them in our veggie patch.
Version 2

November started with stunning roses.

However I was disappointed that these flowers only lasted a week. Other rose bushes have lasted longer.IMG_6626IMG_6496

Our tomato plants are growing tall and have flowers. They are now in support canes. The bed was cleared when we moved in, so we were surprised to see several self seeded plants that are also growing well.

There are flowers on our olive trees.

We have now harvested and enjoyed home grown carrots, beetroot, spring onions, lots of rainbow chard, lots of herbs, rocket and spinach.

The month is ending with these lily type flowers.

our garden

This post is a week late but here is a quick update on our garden during September, the beginning of spring.

The front garden continues to be a splash of colour with lavender bushes in flower.
IMG_5354IMG_5352

I think the small tree is a Willow Myrtle, which now has small white flowers.
IMG_5592IMG_5593

In the back garden the trees I posted last month, now identified as Pittosporum, has tiny black flowers.
IMG_5346

I’m excited to see what colour these iris flowers will be.
IMG_5338

A few creatures have been visible this month. I’m always surprised when I see orange ladybirds, rather than the expected red ones with black spots.
IMG_E4773IMG_4695IMG_5335

Our spinach, carrots and romaine cauliflowers continue to thrive. But something is feasting on the beetroot leaves. I’ve heard possums on our roof and seen rabbits on the other side of our fence, there are wallabies about the neighbourhood. There has definitely been animal droppings in the garden. It’s not square poo so I know it’s not wombats!

One of Australia’s main supermarkets is currently giving away seedlings. This is such a fabulous promotion after back lash on recent plastic collectable toys that are already appearing as rubbish on beaches and in landfill.

Each little cardboard pot contains a soil pellet and a few seeds. Put the pellet in water and it expands, place most of it in the pot, then the seeds, cover with remaining soil. Place in a light position, water each day and wait. I planted these on 28th of Sept so we’ll see how successful they are.

our garden

Another month has gone by in our garden, a month of winter rain, wind and occasional frosts. We had crocuses, for a day, until they were battered by the weather. Daffs continue to flower.
IMG_4435IMG_4329

We’ve harvested rocket and spinach, enjoying the “oh so fresh” taste with savoury pastries, sandwiches and brunch.

Carrots are shooting and I’ve planted beetroot, rainbow chard, spring onions, garlic and snow pea seedlings.

I cut the rhubarb right back at the end of June. Look at it now. The relish I made was delicious with cheese and biscuits, I’m looking forward to making more.

There are new shoots on two hydrangea bushes. (I admit, I thought they had died!)
IMG_4652A

Our citrus tree has had lots of flowers and tiny fruit are now appearing.
IMG_4719

Does anyone know what this tree is? A few metres tall with sticky seed pods. Two free plant id apps haven’t been useful.
IMG_4659

And I’m not sure what these will be. The joy of a new garden 🙂

our garden, seasons

It’s been a quiet month in the garden. I’m trusting that seeds we’ve planted are germinating and growing underground, waiting to shoot when warmer weather arrives.

A highlight has been these deep pink camellia blooms. The buds were covered in aphids and ants so I was delighted that one spray treatment resulted in such beautiful flowers.
IMG_3701IMG_3704

We’ve trimmed our variegated hedge.
IMG_4074

We used sprigs pruned from the rosemary bush to make lamb kebabs. They cooked nicely on the barbeque. Yes we are the crazy neighbours who barbeque in the dark on cold winter evenings.

I’ve been buying a gardening magazine and watching back shows of Gardening Australia on tv. I have a lot to learn about gardening in this vast southern land.
IMG_E4052IMG_E4061

As we come to the end of the month there are signs that spring is around the corner with dwarf narcissus appearing. And today, another camellia has bloomed. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the colour in our winter garden.

our garden, seasons

Our front garden has become more colourful this month with this show of nemesia flowers.
IMG_3262 (1)IMG_3263

I have pruned the half dozen rose bushes and had some pretty blooms in a vase indoors.
IMG_3269IMG_3270

We planted a herb pot on our balcony which is going well. Mint, thyme and coriander were established plants. The rocket seeds in the top section are growing nicely.DSC03886IMG_3550

In the back garden we have kept it tidy. I planted a few seeds in our veggie patch. The spinach is looking strong, carrots and Romanesco broccoli were sown a few weeks later so have yet to appear.
IMG_E3528

I cut back a rosemary bush and harvested some rhubarb. There wasn’t enough for a pie or crumble so I chose to make a rhubarb relish, which we will enjoy with cheese and biscuits.
IMG_E3545

We have a compost bin again and are happy to make productive use of our food waste.IMG_E2923

It’s been a relaxed and pleasurable month in our garden 🙂

flowers, our garden

This is the garden we’ve acquired with our new home. African daisies are in full flower, in various colours. DSC03843DSC03838DSC03840

There are a couple of flower beds in front of the house. One easy care bed with rosemary bushes. One beside the drive with roses, small azaleas, lilies and other as yet unidentified plants. IMG_2873IMG_3268A

At the back, there is a large wooden deck area, with the real garden behind the hedge. When we viewed the house the two raised vegetable beds were full, but they were empty when we moved in. So we are starting from scratch in those beds.IMG_2542AIMG_2546IMG_2473image

On the right hand side of the decking there are olive trees and one citrus bush. The lemons had been picked before we moved in but olives are maturing on at least one tree.IMG_2543IMG_2545

We are happy that there is no lawn and we won’t need a mower. As this is the first garden we’ve had in Australia, we had no tools or equipment. We only had a hand trowel for our balcony herb box in our rental place. So we have purchased gloves, secateurs, watering can and a hose to begin our new garden journey.

I’m looking forward to the coming months, to see what this garden will reveal. The first year will be full of surprises.

Does anyone know what this lovely soft leave bush might be?DSC03845
